  • A compounding pharmacy is different from a retail pharmacy in that it is equipped with the right ingredients, supplies, and equipment to make customized therapies for clients. At a retail pharmacy, the pharmacy team is simply filling prescriptions using already manufactured bulk supply of medications. They cannot change the strength, dosage form, or flavor, and they cannot remove ingredients that may not be tolerated by their clients. Compounding is the art and science of pharmacy. It is creative and innovative. Through compounding, your pharmacy team is able to design formulas that target specific treatment areas, and oftentimes avoid unwanted side effects or adverse reactions to medication. Compounding is aligned with integrative medicine, where the focus is to optimize and balance your health and wellness.

  • The practice of compounding pharmacy is governed by the FDA, DEA, NABP, USP, and state boards of pharmacy. There are a lot of rules and regulations that need to be followed to maintain compliance. Compounding pharmacies are rigorously evaluated by inspectors to make sure that the medications they produce are safe for their clients. Although the final products made by compounding pharmacies are not tested by the FDA, they are still held to very high standards. Clients want to be sure that their compounded medications won’t harm them, and to be sure, they should establish rapport with their Compounding Pharmacist and the pharmacy team who makes their medications. At Olive Tree Compounding Pharmacy, we often invite clients to review our licenses, which are on conspicuous display in our lobby, and ask to see documentation of ingredients that are used to make their medications. We like to share information and doing so helps us to build trust in our community, not only with patients, but with providers as well.
